Programme: Residential
Project size: 1216 sq.m
Location: Singapore

The courtyard typology is an organization strategy used to transform the constraints of the long East/ West orientation and narrow North/ South orientation of the redevelopment site into a design opportunity for the two bungalows.

Instead of a single building mass with maximum exposure to the sun on its longest East/ West facades, each bungalow is now designed as smaller houses occupying the North and South end with lush landscaping lining the East and West sides around a central courtyard and swimming pool.

Larger windows are maximized at the North and South facades for better natural ventilation while windows at the East and West fa├žades are minimized to reduce solar heat gain. The courtyard and swimming pool becomes a central communal space with abundant natural illumination for the enjoyment of the residents with the lush greenery and trees at the East/ West sides providing privacy from neighboring houses.
