COURTYARD BUNGALOWS

The courtyard typology is an organization strategy used to transform the constraints of the long East/ West orientation and narrow North/ South orientation of the redevelopment site into a design opportunity for the two bungalows.

Instead of a single building mass with maximum exposure to the sun on its longest East/ West facades, each bungalow is now designed as smaller houses occupying the North and South end with lush landscaping lining the East and West sides around a central courtyard and swimming pool.

Larger windows are maximized at the North and South facades for better natural ventilation while windows at the East and West façades are minimized to reduce solar heat gain. The courtyard and swimming pool becomes a central communal space with abundant natural illumination for the enjoyment of the residents with the lush greenery and trees at the East/ West sides providing privacy from neighboring houses.
